Bond style Goa
Casa Colvale www.casacolvale.com is another hidden gem in Anjuna, the north of Goa. It took approximately 1 hour 30 to get from Majorda to this colonial paradise but boy was it worth it! Every nook and cranny here is stunning, and the food was exceptional. Their Vindaloo curry is a hell of a lot calmer, and tastier, than the ones they serve up in the UK. Maybe it’s because it’s served in a relaxing fashion by the river as you watch the animals swim by, or maybe it’s because they really believe in good, nourishing food. It’s slightly more expensive than Vivenda Dos Palhacos in Majorda (£103 in high season but this is for bed and breakfast), but if you combine the two in your visit like I did, you get the best of both worlds. At Casa Colvale, you can hire a driver for your stay who will ferry you from beach to bar to city for about £10 a day. He waits patiently whilst you sunbathe at the French beach restaurant ‘La Plage’, which I didn’t realise until after I returned to meet him with a very hot, not to mention embarassed, face. I got told that this is what happens in Goa, so after the pangs of guilt subsided, I relaxed knowing that he was just giving good service. The hosts at Colvale are a lovely couple who quietly potter about to make sure you have everything you need. It’s unobtrusive and low key whilst maintaining a sense of luxury, warmth and friendliness. You can watch for monkeys as you sunbathe then head to dinner at Fiesta in Baga/Calangute www.fiestagoa.com for incredible food in the beautiful candlelit garden setting. The next day…make sure you hire the private speed boat and look for the animals in the water holes for true Bond style!
